ASUU STRIKE: How Kaduna State University is jeopardising the grades of students by conducting exams despite the industrial action

The ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU)has kept several students at home for over 6 months. At Kaduna State University, exams are ongoing despite the fact that most lecturers have refused to resume school. While students in some departments are writing the examination, others are staring at their exam timetables in awe. It should be noted that the semester was barely six weeks old before the ongoing strike.

The lecturers had not completed their syllabus and there was no continuous assessment before the strike. Speculation has it that the school management resumed academic activities after governor Nasiru EL-Rufai threatened to sack all striking lecturers in the institution.

However, many lecturers still refused to resume despite the threat. The grades of the students would be jeopardized because they haven't completed their syllables and therefore may perform poorly in the examinations. With the competition in the labour market, a poor result might affect their chances of securing a well-paying job after graduation. Many students might be forced to indulge in exam malpractice, thereby affecting the quality of graduates produced by the institution. If students studying professional courses such as medicine and pharmacy take these exams, their future patients will be concerned.

Though ending the strike wasn't entirely a bad idea, however, the institution ought to have completed the syllabus and given enough time to students to study before commencing the examinations. The governor of Kaduna state ought to look into the ongoing examination and put a stop to it. Share your thoughts on this information. Published by Euphoric. photo credit: Google.
